Greening the energy sector refers to increasing energy efficiency (on both the supply and demand side) and obtaining a much greater supply of energy services from renewable sources, both of which will lead to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and other types of pollution.

The 2011 UNEP Green Economy Report argues "that to be green, an economy must not only be efficient, but also fair. Fairness implies recognizing global and country level equity dimensions, particularly in assuring a Just Transition to an economy that is low-carbon, resource efficient, and socially inclusive." This green jobs sector focuses on the creation of renewable energy such as energy produced from wind, solar, biomass, geothermal and hydro-power. It also includes non-renewable energy creation from sources such as oil, coal and gas though the sources must be undergoing large scale eco-friendly modifications.

These activities can include producing or adapting goods and services to be more sustainable, such as providing a recycling service or changing a fleet to use electric vehicles. They also include advocacy, education, regulation and advisory services.
