The symbolic (symbolique) refers to the signifying order, signifiers, in lan-guage, which determine the subject; it refers to the unconscious, and the in-tellectual, the logos endiathetos and the logos prophorikos. It is the relation between the imaginary and symbolic in conscious and unconscious thought which is the core of Lacanian psychoanalysis.

Symbolic, “The symbolic order is simultaneously non-being and insisting to be, that is what Freud has in mind when he talks about the death instinct as being what is most fundamental: a symbolic order in travail, The name of the father (French nom du père) is a concept that Jacques Lacan developed from his seminar The Psychoses (1955–1956) to cover the role of the father in the Symbolic Order.. Lacan plays with the similar sounds in French of le nom du père (the name of the father), le non du père (the no of the father), and les non-dupes errent (the non-dupes err) to emphasize with the first two symbolic one whose function is to stabilize the order within the logo centric structure. Symbolically, Kafka’s father should be read as what Jacques Lacan calls the Name of the Father capable of keeping the “son” in some form of slavery by manipulating his sadomasochistic ills and pains. Jacques Lacan Seminar III: The Psychoses The Symbolic (or Symbolic Order) is a part of the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan, part of his attempt "to distinguish between those elementary registers whose grounding I later put forward in these terms: the symbolic, the imaginary, and the real—a distinction never previously made in psychoanalysis." 2021-04-07 · SYMBOLIC, THE (LACAN) For Jacques Lacan, the symbolic, or the symbolic order, is a universal structure encompassing the entire field of human action and existence. It involves the function of speech and language, and more precisely that of the signifier. It appears as an essentially unconscious, latent apparatus. SYMBOLIC ORDER (Lacan): The social world of linguistic communication, intersubjective relations, knowledge of ideological conventions, and the acceptance of the law (also called the "big Other"). Once a child enters into language and accepts the rules and dictates of society, it is able to deal with others. Lacan, a controversial French psychoanalyst, focused on symbolic-linguistic competence and its psychological repercussions.

Lacan's ideas regarding the symbolic order or the big other are based on the works of de-Saussure, Jakobson, Hegel, Heidegger and Claude Levi-Strauss. Symbolic order was the second idea in the theory. Lacan described it as the order of symbols, illustrations and imagery, where the individual is formed as a subject. He argued that the subconscious is governed by the order of the signifier as opposed to suppressed desires which was a common belief at the time. It exists as an absence in the symbolic order (language), Jacques Lacan 11.

The acceptance of language's rules is aligned with the Oedipus complex, according to Lacan. The child's entry into that order is described as inherently linked to sexuality, desire and the unconscious and as accompanied by feelings of alienation and separation. Insofar as the desire of the unconscious is toward the “Other” Lacan seems to support my claim of an endogenous origin of the societal order.

For him/her, this order of the big Other, in which people This symbolic competence, he claimed, marked the child’s entry into the symbolic order and placed the child in a new psychological context, the place of the Other.

For Lacan "the Other must first of all be considered a locus in which speech is constituted," so that the Other as another subject is secondary to the Other as symbolic order. We can speak of the Other as a subject in a secondary sense only when a subject occupies this position and thereby embodies the Other for another subject.

Insofar as the desire of the unconscious is toward the “Other” Lacan seems to support my claim of an endogenous origin of the societal order. The last stage of the process involves the discovery of symbolic order, in which one learns the norms of his society. The monster attempts to accomplish this by observing the cottagers and succeeds until he is discovered, “At that instant the cottage door was opened, and Felix, Safie, and Agatha entered. Although Lacan uses the terms " real," " symbolic " and " imaginary " from early on in his work, it is not until 1953 that he speaks of these as three " orders " or three " registers.") From that moment on they come to be the fundamental classification system around which all his theorizing turns. Lacan's Three Orders, Symbolic, Imaginary, Real (with a bit about "reality") [this is a chunk taken from a letter I wrote to an artist friend.

This symbolic competence, he claimed, marked the child’s entry into the symbolic order and placed the child in a new psychological context, the place of the Other. To clarify Lacan’s theory I interpret his insights, as found primarily in the 1964 seminar published as Lacan (1978), “The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis According to Lacan, one of the (if not the) most significant and indispensable conditions of possibility for singular subjectivity is the collective symbolic order (sometimes named “the big Other,” a phrase to be unpacked further shortly—see 2.3 below). Lacan conceived of the symbolic order as a totalizing concept in the sense that it marks the limit of the human universe. We are born into language - the language through which the desires of others are articulated and through which we are forced to articulate our own desire.
